Radar, residency project 2009
Loughborough University’s contemporary arts programme. The catalyst for each season is a particular area of research or inquiry that is current and is being investigated by both artists and academics. Workshops: June 24th and 26th, University of Huddersfield.
Biorama2 will explore the biology of the underground through the notion of ‘umwelt’ developed by Jakob von Uexküll (1864 – 1944) and its influence on the development of biosemiotics by Thomas Sebeok (1920 – 2001). Using the underground of caves and mines and the organic life they contain as a form of parallel terrestrial biology, we develop a ‘parallel science’ through the study of extreme and/or ‘removed lifeforms’ and through the science of astrobiology. Biorama II will explore a rich contextual and conceptual background against which to investigate some of the outer (or inner) limits of terrestrial biology and strategies for life…

Can artists work with animals as equals? It has recently been discovered that humans are closer to the higher primates than was previously thought. This exhibition, organised by The Arts Catalyst on the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth brings together a group of artists who actively question the sovereignty of the human species over the all other animal species. Sonic Streams – research the impact of sound on the human body.
Participants have researched the effect of sound on the human body and the environments they inhabit, they have explored sound as a tool for health and healthy environments. The have developed ideas and sound work that could be potentially used as therapeutic tools and installed to create healthy sonic environments, which can be listen to and view on their research journals.
